Xavier gets bowled. Brad and Rian score 8s.

Brad scored 8 runs off consecutive deliveries, and Xavier was bowled twice in one over. These two events sparked questions - and in the first case, further events - which form the basis of this week's blog. Probably the last for 2012...

Types of wickets by a batsman
After seeing Xavier bowled twice in one innings (and indeed, in one over), the team wondered how often that had happened before. The feeling was that bowled was not a common way to see him lose a wicket.

So let's start by quickly getting that answer. The team's feeling was correct: last week was only the 5th time in 166 bats for the Popped Collars that Xavier has been bowled twice in an single skin. One of those five occasions he was bowled 3 times.

But what about more generally? What is the most times a player has been out a particular way in one skin?

The standout records are held by two opposition players, who were caught 6 and 7 times in a single skin. If I were to make a list, those two would be on top, and then would come a long list of 5-timers.

Among those 5-wicket efforts, the Popped Collars batsmen are
5 times run-out:  Sanjit, Brad, Asif
5 times caught: Andy, Rian (twice), Xavier, and Gibbo (filling in for us from the Groms).

As you can see - unsurprisingly - catches and run-outs dominate this list. There have been 78 occasions where someone has lost the same wicket 4 or more times - and only 1 of them is NOT caught or run-out. That was way back in January 2010, when Lyndon (from our old mates The Boonies) was bowled 4 times.

Runs off a ball
Brad - presumably just being mean to the Groms, and wanting to hog the strike - hit two sevens in a row last week, which were complemented with an additional physical run, turning them into eights!

Not to be out-done, Rian went and did it 3 times when he batted! (not consecutively). He then hit a four off the last (double runs) ball, to make 4 balls in his innings resulting in 8 runs. Gareth's question at the time was "what is the most consecutive balls for each score?" For example, most consecutive eights is presumably 2. What about consecutive dots, ones, twos, threes, etc.

I'm interested to look at some more things to do with this one day - but for now, here's a very quick run down of the longest streaks. In counting these, I don't care how the runs came about (extras, double runs, whatever), I'm only looking at the total score resulting from each ball.

Note 1: This was the result of one team finishing their innings with 2 dots, and the Popped Collars starting their innings with 2 more! Theoretically, 2 should be the most, due to the third-ball rules. But I remember doing a blog one day where I found a few umpire-errors allowing 3-in-a-row.

Note 2: There has actually been another occasion where, technically, 2 eights were scored in a row. A team scored 7+overthrow off the final ball of a skin, and then a double-four off the first ball of the next skin!

Winning streak
To finish off, last week was the Popped Collars 12th consecutive win, surpassing their previous best of 11 in-a-row. While technically it was their 13th consecutive match which they won, one of those matches (against "Shaw") was agreed to be left out of the team stats.

The current streak consists of the final game at Lyneham (vs Choking Dogs), and then a perfect 11 matches so far at Kaleen.

The previous 11-match streak was from 1 August to 10 October 2011. Interestingly, it was also during a change of venues - it consisted of the team's last 4 matches at Weston, followed by 7 in-a-row to begin the return to Lyneham.

That previous streak was actually part of an even larger feat. The match before the streak began was actually the end of a 7-match streak. That is, 7-wins-in-a-row, then a single loss, then 11-in-a-row. A total of 18 out of 19 games won from June to October 2011. That single loss was against Von STC Pumas. Not sure how that mob managed to knock us off...!
