The exciting example last week was the final ball of the match. Popped Collars, batting second, trailed by 8 runs. Rian just managed to hit the back net on the full, with only a foot to spare from the side net, and not much higher off the ground. The batters turned to go for a second run, looking for a tie, but the fielder unfortunately hit the stumps with his throw, finding Gareth just short of his ground.
Earlier in the game, Tim had also bowled a no-ball that got hit for a maximum, making 9 runs off that ball.
A note on terminology: An "overthrow" in these stats are counted as any physical run which was made by batters after the first one. It doesn't necessarily mean the fielders had a shot at the stumps and missed beforehand. The batters could have sneaked through for a run while the bowler was at the top of his run-up shining the ball, or while the bowler had put the ball on the ground next to him to tie his shoe laces. I've seen both of those things happen before.
Most runs off 1 ball
Obviously it's quite easy to make many runs off a single ball when it's a special "jackpot ball" or "power ball" where the scores are doubled. Uninterestingly, 14 is the highest score off a single ball. It has happened 49 times in our matches - 47 of them are doubled sevens, the other 2 were doubled "no ball plus five". 25 times have been by us, 24 by opponents.
But let's ignore double scores, and look at those who were able to get (or get hit for) large scores off a single regular ball.
Batting
Here's the list...
Batter | N7 | 7+1 | N5+1 | Total |
Rian | 2 | 7 | 9 | |
Brad | 2 | 6 | 8 | |
Andy | 4 | 1 | 5 | |
Xavier | 3 | 1 | 4 | |
Gareth | 2 | 1 | 3 | |
Jake | 3 | 3 | ||
Steven | 2 | 2 | ||
Matt | 1 | 1 | ||
Sanjit | 1 | 1 |
Brad took advantage of our spin-off team GG, scoring 4 of his 8 shots while playing for that team. Rian, on the other hand, has all 9 of his scores for Popped Collars.
Xavier has the honour (or something) of being the only player to use both a no-ball and an overthrow on the same ball to make a big score. There have been 3 other occasions where the batters ran an overthrow on a ball that was an extra - but all of them saw only a 1 run scored as the initial score.
Bowling
There have been 3 occasions where batters have successfully completed 2 overthrows on one ball. All of them were by opponents. One of them features in the next table because it was done off a ball that had already been hit for seven!
How exciting would it have been if the fielder last week had missed his shot at the stumps on the last ball and given Gareth and Rian a chance to run a second overthrow for the win...?
