The game in question saw Brad score 52 and have 1/53 taken off his bowling. Note, however, that he did bowl 3 overs to get so many runs taken off him.
He asked the question:
Has anyone else done a half-century with both bat and ball in one game?
The simple answer is: No. Congratulations Brad, you are the first.
To find the people who have come the closest, I will use three different methods:
1. Highest batting scores by players who conceded 50 runs in bowling
This record was held jointly by two fellows called Tim (from different teams) who both scored 43 runs and conceded over 50. In the table below, numbers in brackets show the number of innings or number of overs bowled (as appropriate).
The second entry in this list is certainly impressive, having being done without using additional innings or overs.
Player | Team | Batting | Bowling |
Brad | Popped Collars | 52 (1) | 53 (3) |
Tim | The Balbs | 43 (1) | 58 (2) |
Tim | 66s | 43 (1) | 55 (3) |
Jake | Popped Collars | 42 (2) | 60 (3) |
Brad | Popped Collars | 42 (2) | 57 (4) |
Brad | Popped Collars | 41 (1) | 56 (3) |
Mark | Four Skins | 40 (1) | 50 (2) |
Andy | Popped Collars | 39 (2) | 71 (4) |
John | LMIAB | 36 (1) | 50 (3) |
Paul | Tuff Stuff | 34 (1) | 77 (4) |
2. Most runs conceded by players who scored a 50 with the bat
Here we find the closest anyone else has come to matching Brad's 50/50. Our old mate Joel from the 4Skins came within 2 runs of bowling 50 runs. He did, however, require an extra innings AND and extra over to get so close.
The 'best' performance without having to do any filling in for missing players is by Brad himself - the sixth entry on the list below.
Player | Team | Batting | Bowling |
Brad | Popped Collars | 52 (1) | 53 (3) |
Joel | 4 Skins | 61 (2) | 48 (3) |
Andy | Popped Collars | 59 (2) | 42 (3) |
Lachlan | Popped Collars | 66 (2) | 40 (4) |
Xavier | Popped Collars | 58 (2) | 40 (3) |
Brad | Popped Collars | 55 (1) | 36 (2) |
Sam | Boonies | 54 (1) | 36 (3) |
Gareth | Popped Collars | 68 (2) | 35 (2) |
Brad | Popped Collars | 53 (2) | 35 (3) |
3. Most "Runs Caused"
Here's a new stat that I've decided to call "Runs Caused". It shall be defined as: runs scored with the bat PLUS runs conceded in bowling.
Here's the list of all the times a player has had 100 runs caused in a match:
Player | Team | Batting | Bowling | Total Runs Caused |
Rian | Popped Collars | 77 (1) | 34 (2) | 111 |
Paul | Tuff Stuff | 34 (1) | 77 (4) | 111 |
Andy | Popped Collars | 39 (2) | 71 (4) | 110 |
Joel | 4 Skins | 61 (2) | 48 (3) | 109 |
Lachlan | Popped Collars | 66 (2) | 40 (4) | 106 |
Bradley | Porridge Pies | 26 (2) | 80 (3) | 106 |
Brad | Popped Collars | 52 (1) | 53 (3) | 105 |
Gareth | Popped Collars | 68 (2) | 35 (2) | 103 |
Andy | Popped Collars | 102 (2) | 1 (2) | 103 |
Jake | Popped Collars | 42 (2) | 60 (3) | 102 |
Rian | Popped Collars | 79 (2) | 23 (3) | 102 |
Tim | The Balbs | 43 (1) | 58 (2) | 101 |
Andy | Popped Collars | 59 (2) | 42 (3) | 101 |
Rian | Popped Collars | 75 (2) | 25 (2) | 100 |
Once again, we find that 77-run innings of Rian's topping a list. This time helped greatly by the fact that he paired it with a far-below-average bowling performance. Most impressive about that is that he had no extra overs or innings - there's only one other entry in the above list that does that (third from the bottom).
On that note, here's the top few performances where players had no opportunity to bat or bowl extra times.
Player | Team | Batting | Bowling | Total Runs Caused |
Rian | Popped Collars | 77 | 34 | 111 |
Tim | The Balbs | 43 | 58 | 101 |
Brad | Popped Collars | 55 | 36 | 91 |
Brad | Popped Collars | 64 | 26 | 90 |
Mark | Four Skins | 40 | 50 | 90 |
Brad, with two entries in the top five, seems to be a prolific causer of runs. Indeed, if I were to extend this list, you would find seven of Brad's performances in the top 25!
Let's finish off with two more quick tables:
Least Runs Caused in a match
The reverse of the above list - occurrences of players batting poorly and bowling well.
Player | Team | Batting | Bowling | Total Runs Caused |
Jim Ragg | Popped Collars | -27 (1) | -28 (2) | -55 |
Jim Ragg | Popped Collars | -27 (1) | -14 (2) | -41 |
Josh | Having A Bat | -14 (1) | -15 (2) | -29 |
Gareth | Popped Collars | -5 (1) | -21 (2) | -26 |
Luke | Squid Tubes | -13 (1) | -11 (2) | -24 |
Rod | Rebels | 6 (1) | -28 (3) | -22 |
Daniel | Popped Collars | 2 (1) | -24 (3) | -22 |
Sam | Squid Tubes | -17 (1) | -5 (2) | -22 |
Jake | Kerwin's Mob | 4 (1) | -24 (2) | -20 |
Gareth | Popped Collars | -1 (1) | -19 (2) | -20 |
That's right, Jim once played a game where he scored -27, and still had a positive contribution!! (I thought I had done that as a blog entry before, but I couldn't find it. Instead, I found another entry where I said "I thought I had done that as a blog entry before, but can't find it". Hmmm, think I'll pencil that in for next week!)
Runs Caused: Career Averages
Despite the dominating performances we've seen from Brad in today's stats, he doesn't top the overall career list. To be honest, I'm not surprised at all to see Julian quite clearly on top in this category.
Player | Batting Average | Bowling Average |
Average Runs Caused |
Julian | 22.46 | 17.83 | 40.29 |
Brad | 23.78 | 14.85 | 38.63 |
Xavier | 24.85 | 13.29 | 38.14 |
Daniel | 18.82 | 17.01 | 35.83 |
Jake | 18.51 | 17.28 | 35.79 |
Rian | 25.44 | 10.05 | 35.49 |
Andy | 19.85 | 13.21 | 33.06 |
Matt | 11.65 | 20.69 | 32.34 |
Gareth | 17.63 | 12.88 | 30.51 |
Sanjit | 14.63 | 14.46 | 29.09 |
Jim | 16.56 | 7.77 | 24.33 |
No sure whether to be proud or disgusted...
