Good/Bad contributions despite a bad/good performance

This is a topic that, on several occasions, I've thought I'd already written about. But apparently I haven't. So here it is. This is all about players who do very badly in one aspect of the game (batting or bowling), but still manage to get a positive contribution. Also players who do very well in one aspect, but end up with a negative contribution.

Two weeks ago, there was discussion of "runs caused". The records listed there were players who both scored and conceded many runs in the same game. Several of those performances will show up again in these first tables.

So here we go... what is the highest score that a player has made, while still ending up with a negative contribution to his team overall?
For consistency, contribution will always be counted using the score made in your first bat, and your first two overs bowled (ie, no extra innings/overs)

Highest batting scores, but with negative contribution

I love the performance at the top of that list. Not only is it the highest score, but it is also the most negative contribution. On top of that, his bowling figures were actually 1/58... he took a wicket! The wicket was his first ball, and he then got taken to the back net 8 times including 4 sevens.
This is another game that I remember - a bunch of centre brats who came out swinging and scored 100 in their first skin. We pegged them back after that, and batted well, but the opening partnership was too big for us to overcome.

Also good to see Brad in there 3 times, as expected after his "runs caused" stats from the previous post.

Worst bowling, but with positive contribution
This is similar to the last list - we're still looking at lots of runs caused - but for those whose batting managed to make up for their poor performance with the ball.

Once again it's Brad, Brad, Brad hogging the stats (literally, with his three in a row there).

Lowest batting scores, but with positive contribution
Now let's switch it up again. Here are people who batted badly, but managed to make up enough with the ball to be a useful contributor to their team's performance.

That list covers everyone who has made a negative score, then bowled their way into the positives.

Best bowling, but with negative contribution
To complete all the possible combinations, here's those whose contribution was a let down even after they bowled superbly.

Jim Ragg absolutely takes the cake here. In all our stats, that bowling performance that rates in the top 1.5% (about 40th out of about 2700), and then the third worst score on record with the bat.

At first I thought this may have been the game he attempted to do "The 9", but gave up because the opposition got pissy about it. But no, Jim scored his -27 in a game against 4Skins (who were the team who later helped Rian achieve the 9), and the game was actually in the balance at the time:
Chasing 107, Xavier and Julian had made 39 for the first pair when Jim went in to bat with Rian. And that was where the game stopped being interesting (except for those who enjoyed watching Jim lose wickets). He faced 16 balls and was out 8 times.

Zero contribution
Everything before this has been looking at positive and negative contributions. So for absolute completeness, I will mention that the records for making a contribution of exactly zero are:

  • The highest score (and worst bowling) is 34 by Rian and also by Joel (4Skins)
  • The lowest score (and best bowling) is -3 by Gareth, way back in 2009.

Deja Vu
The more I write about these stats, the more I'm certain that I've looked at them before. Perhaps I looked at them for my own interest. Perhaps I planned, or even started a blog post about it, but never finished. In any case, if anyone comes across another mention of them from the past... let me know...

  1. Jim contribution was either in a semi or a final...dont really care to remember which, lol!

  2. Ahh, indeed it was.
Semi-final of the 2010 season. The only season at Weston we didn't win.
Presumably you remember it well for the unprecedented levels of Brage that would have resulted.

  3. Something like that!
