Overall, the team had a better average with both bat and ball. In the summer season (2009/10), our average total was 141.0 runs, and we conceded 117.9. This season just gone saw our average rise to 146.1, and our opponents average fall to 109.1. This also showed in the individual stats, with 6 of the regular 8 players improving their batting average, and 5 improve their bowling.
Batting
In season 1, the batting averages were topped by Brad in a close run thing with several other players. This time around, in was domination from Julian. Despite being ranked #2 in our first season, Jules managed an average more than 2.5 runs above the previous season to end up well clear of all team-mates with an impressive average of more than 24.
The biggest mover, however, was Jake. His batting average jumped by more than 3 runs.
Sanjit and Brad were the only two players whose averages were lower for the season season.
Name | This season | Last season | Improvement |
Jake | 17.96 | 14.75 | +3.21 |
Julian | 24.40 | 21.81 | +2.59 |
Andy | 18.25 | 17.37 | +0.88 |
Gareth | 18.05 | 17.30 | +0.75 |
Xavier | 21.96 | 21.40 | +0.56 |
Rian | 20.45 | 20.10 | +0.36 |
Brad | 21.60 | 22.64 | -1.04 |
Sanjit | 10.33 | 13.21 | -2.88 |
Bowling
It seems Jake may be putting in some extra training with the bat, looking to turn himself into a specialist batsman, at the expense of his bowling. He was the biggest improver in the batting department, and the biggest loser with the ball. Fortunately, no matter what he does, he will always be the team champion with regard to shorts.
Sanjit and Julian also posted small decreases in bowling performance, while everyone else bounded ahead.
In terms of average per match, Xavier was the #1 bowler in 2009/10 with 11.4. This was almost 2 and 3 runs better than Andy (2nd) and Rian (3rd) respectively. But both A.Ragg and "Brian" made impressive improvements over the course of season two, Rian even finishing with an average of less that 10 (less than 5 per over). However Xavier was equal to the task, improving his own average by 3 runs to hold on to the top spot with an average of just 8.4 runs per match.
Brad also made an extremely impressive jump of almost 3.5 to get his average below a run a ball.
The team's bowling average was also helped along by having number-one-sub, Jim, also manage a sub-ten bowling average of just 9.5 runs per match.
Name | This season | Last season | Improvement |
Rian | 9.40 | 14.19 | +4.79 |
Brad | 13.80 | 17.25 | +3.45 |
Xavier | 8.36 | 11.38 | +3.01 |
Andy | 11.40 | 13.22 | +1.83 |
Gareth | 11.95 | 13.22 | +1.27 |
Julian | 19.42 | 18.94 | -0.48 |
Sanjit | 16.40 | 15.42 | -0.98 |
Jake | 18.30 | 14.39 | -3.91 |
While many of these averages will be tough to top (in particular Julian's batting and anyone who bowls below 10 per match), Brad will no doubt be looking for inspiration for us all to improve on whatever our current performances are, and take the Popped Collars back to the top of the competition next season.
Considering A. Ragg bowls, on average, more than 11.4 sundries a match, his overall average is actually outrageously good.
