Julian Mellor and Andrew Pearson face off, looking to salvage 3rd place in the World Cup.
Julian and Pearson have never batted together, but have played 11 games in common. Game number 8 was chosen to decide the "bronze medalist" in this tournament. 23 August 2010, a game against the Boonies.
Julian batted in the first pair with Xavier, and Pearson batted in the second pair with Jim Ragg.
Both players were quiet for their first over. Toying with the opposition, and feeling out their weaknesses. Neither scored more than two, but didn't lose a wicket either, just getting their eyes in.
Over number 2 saw Julian get away a five on the first ball, and looking confident. His next ball went one better, claiming the first goal of the game. Andrew continued to poke around, still trying to find his mojo, and Julian attacked again, scoring a second time! Julz faced only 3 balls in that second over, but he had made them count with 5-7-7.
With a 2 goal advantage, Julian went into defensive mode, picking off a bunch of twos in the next over. Pearson, on the other hand, desperate to catch up, lost a string of wickets without being able to score a seven.
The two goal advantage remained heading into the final over, when Julian put away what was surely the winning shot. Second ball of the over, and he was up by 3. Pearson struck one of his own just in time... he had 5 balls to go, and had got back to within 2. A slim chance remained.
He missed his next chance, essentially putting himself out of contention, and Julian pounced to deliver an icing-on-the-cake 4th goal.
Here are the full scores for both players:
Pearson 1 - 4 Julian
This result ensures that 3 truly 'regular' Popped Collars players will take the top 3 places in this tournament.
