Popped Cup results - Round 2

The results for round 2 of the group stage of the Popped Collars World Cup are here...

Pool A

Rian and Andy batted together 5 times back in the days of the Ragg. The random selection was number 4 (6/6/11). In an all-round high-scoring game for the Popped Collars, Rian chose himself (I assume) to go back into bat in the final pair with Andy.
Ragg got the scoring underway early in the second over, but Rian replied off the second-last ball of that over, squaring things up. Not to be outdone, Andy hit the very next ball for another goal, reclaiming the lead at the halfway mark. Consecutive sevens for Rian in the third over gave him the lead back again, as the pair moved to 62 with one over to bat. The final over was more subdued, and Rian held on for the win, in a cracking encounter.
Rian   3 - 2   Andy

Jake and Omar have never played a game together. It might sound like the obvious result, but Omar did actually fill in for us back in the old days - just not for any game that Jake also played.
Jake   0 - 0   Omar

With a second win, Rian secures his place in the finals. Jake and Omar are still a slim chance of knocking Andy out to take the other spot.

Pool B

A.Pearson and B.Lockley must have been something of a regular pair for a while - they have batted together 7 times. The 6th of these was chosen (4/10/10). Against the 4Skins, Pearson tried to cause carnage from the outset - his first 5 balls consisted of 3 sevens and 2 wickets. Brad got one back in the final over, but the damage was well and truly done.
Pearson   3 - 1   Brad

Gareth and Matt have batter together 8 times. The third of these pairs was chosen (19/9/11). It was a high scoring game in general, with the Popped Collars chasing down 173 with two overs to spare. G and Matt made 33, the lowest skin for the team. The only seven was a late strike from Gareth to put him in front with just 2 balls remaining in the pair.
Gareth   1 - 0   Matt

Mathematically, any of these players can go through, and any can miss out. Gareth and Andrew obviously hold the advantage, however.

Pool C

The battle of the Dans fizzles out - they have never played a game together.
Dan I   0 - 0   Dan S

Xavier and Chris Reid have batted together only once - no random selection required. The game was earlier this year, at Kaleen. On this romantic occasion (14/2/14), it was a quiet night. Only 3 sevens were hit in the entire match, and all of them were by the opposition... even though we won 133-51.

There is yet to be a goal scored in pool C. It all comes down to the final round of matches. In the increasingly likely event that some players cannot be split using the standard World Cup criteria, the highest seeded player(s) will advance.

Pool D

Jim and Rajit have never played a game together. Jim's most recent game for us was 4 months before Rajit's first.
Jim   0 - 0   Rajit

Julian and Sanjit have batted together twice before. Both of those were in the same game (21/3/11). We were two players down - Julz and Sanj went in 2nd, and were then chosen to go again as the 4th pair. Their second-chance pair was chosen for this match.
Julian's first over consisted of 3 wickets and a seven, to take an early lead, but Sanjit replied early in the second over, before Julian took the lead back on the last ball of that same over. Again, Sanjit was equal to the task, equalising just 4 balls later. And there the scores remained as Sanjit held on for an unexpected draw against one of the team's most enthusiastic hitter.
Julian   2 - 2   Sanjit

Unless there are some big scores and margins in the final round of matches, Sanjit and Julz should go through. But... anything can happen.

  2. Let's assume that Rian tops group A (a likely outcome) and that somehow I finish second in group B (an outside shot, but possible), who in FIFA do I need to bribe to ensure last night's match is chosen for QF1?

  3. The PCICA (Popped Collars Indoor Cricket Association) statistics division is a one man phenomenon - his integrity is beyond reproach!
